The AnnieRuth Foundation 7th Annual Christmas Party

U.S. G.I.R.L.S. hearts were warmed in the chilly weather as we helped the AnnieRuth Foundation celebrate their 7th Annual Christmas Party!

This year the Foundation's party efforts concentrated on the Desert Winds and Caravan Trails Apartments on Jacksonville's Southside. I love the concept of the party coming to the area it is serving, so everyone who would like to participate (regardless of transportation constraints), can attend. We watched as "little ones" toggled down their apartment building stairs (still sleepy eyed) to join the festivities as some sat on the stairs, still in their pajamas (more than likely awaiting parental permission).

Although the event was scheduled for 10-3; we were surprised to see so many children were there for the opening ceremonies and ready to partake in the outdoor games. They immediately began with a "potato sack" race and "tug or war". It was so refreshing to see 100s of children playing traditional games that were not electronic.

Executive Director and Life Coach, DeAndrous (Dee) Wilcox explained that each participant is awarded a stocking and one (1) gift. The bicycles are awarded via a raffle system. The children and senior citizens were walking around the various tents to survey all the gifts that were donated to discern which "gift" they would like to select.

It was wonderful to see the gifts donated by U.S. G.I.R..L.S. and guests, come full circle as they were meticulously

laid out, ready to be selected. It was even more impactful this year because due to scheduling conflicts, The AnnieRuth Foundation lost a major toy sponsor this year.

There were volunteers from several entities, however the program's interns really

stood out (not because of their Santa Hats); because they all possessed this eagerness on their faces to work with the community and make the day a success.

As the fun and games were in progress, the BBQ lunch was being prepared by "Ally" who is one of the events major sponsors. The charcoal aroma permeated the air as stomachs "growled" in anticipation of the meal.

When Santa Claus arrived, ALL the children (and some adults) ran towards him in excitement.

It was an amazing experience as well as a rewarding one and U.S. G.I.R.L.S. are honored to have played a part in the day's success!!

"Merry Christmas, Y'all !"
