A special shout out to U.S.G.I.R.L.S book club for allowing me to be a fly on the wall during their December book club discussion of CHRISTMAS DINNER.

Their comments were honest and endearing. They are a special group of readers that every author should connect with.

Thanks again. I hope I can come back soon as a fly on the wall.

In a side note, I would like to suggest author Vanessa Miller Pierce for an upcoming book club pick. She is an Essence bestselling author and she's looking to meet with 50 book clubs before her May release. She had booked 33 so far. Just a thought.

Again, be blessed and Merry Christmas!

Thank you for having me as a guest for this meeting on Black Girls Must Die Exhausted. As an author it was exciting to see so many readers who were really engaged with the content. It was also scary. Y'all take your books seriously. But I also know that means, if I am ever selected for one of your book clubs, you guys will be brutally honest and that will only help to make me a better writer. Every author should want the privilege of having their work read and reviewed by U.S. G.I.R.L.S

Dear U.S. G.I.R.L.S.,

Thank you for inviting me and including me on your Authors site.

One of the best things that I have experienced since writing The Kitchen House has been my interactions with wonderful book clubs and now I include the US GIRLS as one of them.

I am often asked, "What is a white woman from Saskatchewan doing in Virginia and writing about slavery?" My answer is always the same.

While renovating an old tavern in south side Virginia I was shown an old map and there saw a notation that read Negro Hill. I became obsessed with trying to discover what had happened on that property. I was frustrated when no answer was forthcoming, until a very old African American woman, Mrs. Bessie Lowe, suggested that I pray about it and then write a story. I took her advice and began to do research that lasted well over a year. Then, one day, unbidden, Lavinia and Belle made an appearance. They came as though in a memory or a movie in my mind. I began to write what I was seeing  and the only time they left was when I would try to change their actions. Thus I wrote The Kitchen House.

Some of the characters came with their names, but when they didn't I would look at lists of slave names and one would always jump out. I consider writing  both The Kitchen House and Glory Over Everything  spiritual gifts and I am grateful to the souls who entrusted me with their stories.

Thank you, U.S. G.I.R.L.S., for this, and all of the social media support.

My very best to you,

Kathleen

Dear U.S. G.I.R.L.S Book Club,

Thank you so much for choosing my book,
The Secret of Magic for your July meeting. I was so thrilled when I received the news and look forward to being with you on the 26th.  You at U.S.G.I.R.L.S are exactly the kind of  audience I envisioned when I wrote the novel—strong, intelligent, independent women who are interested in literature and family and the world around them.  I can hardly wait for our discussion. It should be one of the best I’ve had yet!

I have always believed that the end of the Second World War was a seminal moment for the Civil Rights Movement and that the oftentimes dangerous work of the lawyers and staff at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund was essential to the changes we’ve witnessed since then. With that in mind, I wrote  The Secret of Magic as a tribute to three people who lived through that crucial era: my own grandfather Joe Howard Thurman, his idol Thurgood Marshall and my  own idol Constance Baker Motley upon whom I based the character of Regina Mary Robichard.

It is gratifying to note that since its publication in January 2014, The Secret of Magic has had a wonderful reception both here and abroad. It has been chosen as a 2014 Indie Pick by the Independent Booksellers Association and as an “Okra” Pick by the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance.

See you on the 26th!

Best regards,

Hi U.S. G.I.R.L.S.,

Originally, this book was suppose to focus only on the verbal abuse women face by the men they loved. The book sort of took on a life of its own (which I'm happy it did); focusing on many social issues -verbal,  physical, emotional, and child abuse along
with racial tensions still very prevalent today.

I hope your book club enjoys the book and thanks again for making me your feature author for April.

Synopsis:
In the late 1960's in Selma, Alabama, an interracial couple, Richard Adams and Marilyn Halston encountered relentless ridicule, threats, and even beatings by white southern racists - all for the sake of love. The couple escaped that place and time by migrating to the West when they married – for Marilyn this was just the beginning of her tormented future

.

Brittney Adams, their daughter and founder of Ebony Eyes, a home for troubled pregnant teens discovers an unspeakable secret her parents had concealed for over thirty years. Brittney’s persistent unraveling of the truth forces the family to come face to face with the demons from their past. Still distressed and afflicted - Brittney is faced with yet another challenge. A new resident, a sixteen year old pregnant teen, Angela, is being stalked by a mysterious man. As Brittney tries desperately to protect her mom and now Angela – a deadly accident takes place in the Adams’ home.

A BIG Thank you to U.S.G.I.R.L.S. for electing Passing Love as your October read. Book clubs are so very important to an author. I hope you have a lovely discussion and maybe a bit of champagne to celebrate your "armchair"  visit to Paris.

I signed your guestbook--what a great idea!

Passing Love is my second novel. As a teenager, I wrote stories and poems that
were published in our local paper. after college  I pursued a career in the business world. I put writing on hold for many years, and now  I'm thrilled to have rekindled my passion. Many readers have asked why I've written two novels that take place in Paris, and what is the lure Paris holds for me. Paris is a great place, filled with terrific energy (not to mention good wine, good food, and great cheese). There's an ancient charm about the place that makes every street corner historic. It was exciting to find that there is so much African American history there as well and I wanted to share it with my readers. Paris was the perfect backdrop for Ruby and Nicole to discover what a big part coincidence and serendipity can play in anyone's life and to discover themselves and each other.    www.jacquelineluckett.com     ~Jacqueline

Thank you for your comments on  "The Darkest Child." I am so glad you enjoyed the novel. You are right on your recollection of Hambone.  He was the young man who returned from Chicago, groped Tangy in her mother's kitchen, disliked and distrusted whites, caused the confusion at the fair, and worked on Miss Veatrice's house.

Dear U.S.  G.I.R.L.S. Book Club,

Thanks so much for selecting Queen Sugar for your  October meeting.

One of the most rewarding things about having written my novel is hearing from readers. I especially appreciate nowing that book clubs like yours have discovered the book. I've spoken to quite a number of local book clubs here in he Bay Area, and it's a real treat for me to hear, firsthand, what people thought of the story and the characters.Queen Sugar, which took 11 years to write, is losely inspired bysome members of my family.  My grandmother, Miss Rose, was the inspiration for Miss Honey, and I have two lovely aunts who remind me a lot of Aunt Violet.  My father was born in Louisiana, and most of his family (his siblings and their  children) still lives there; so even though I'm a California native,  I have Louisiana roots and have loved spending time there.

In writing the the book, I wanted to explore questions of reverse-migration, mothers-and-daughters, identity, race, and class. In the early days of writing, I heard of so many people, particularly African-Americans, who were moving "back home" to the south, and I was intrigued by that idea.  I thought it would be interesting to write a story about a young, modern, African-American woman who goes "back home," but as a person who has no personal experience of the south.  What would that experience be like for her?  What challenges would she face?

As for me, I live in San Francisco with my family and two daughters.  Aside from writing, I love to ride my bike and going to the movies.  I'm enjoy listening to live music and cooking, as long as I can do it at a leisurely pace, which usually means when I have time to cook for friends.

My next novel, which I'm just starting to research, will also be set in Louisiana, although it won't have anything to do with sugarcane.  I'll keep you posted!  In the meantime, I just learned that Queen Sugar was long-listed for the Crooks Book Prize, which is a new literary prize for Southern novels.

I invite you to stay in touch through  my website (nataliebaszile.com) or on my Facebook author page (Facebook.com/nataliebaszileauthor)

A thousand thanks again for selecting Queen Sugar.
Warm wishes,
Natalie

meeting though.  And just to let you know, I just finished the Mama Ruby follow up, which will be the sequel to Upper Room.  In it, the girl finds out at the age of thirty-six that Mama Ruby kidnapped her and the baby girl that Mama Ruby gave birth to as a teenager will be a major character in the new book. It will be eleased next year.  In the meantime, my next released "God Don't Make No Mistakes,"

the sixth and final book in "God Don't Like Ugly"  series, will be released June 1 of this year.  I hope you and your book club members will read and  enjoy it.

I sincerely appreciate your support.  I hope the
book club meeting will go well--just wish I could be there.  Thanks for including information about your web site.

Have a blessed day.
