U.S. G.I.R.L.S.Do you remember the 70's hit by Seals and Croft entitled, "Summer Breeze, Makes Me Feel Fine...(blowing though the jasmine of my mind)?" Well, that could have been the theme song for the day as Maria, our hostess, greeted U.S. G.I.R.L.S. to Copeland's, New Orleans to discuss William P. Young's controversial novel, The Shack.
When we entered the restaurant, Maria had the table settings adorned with purple and gold accents (as she said) to represent regal-ness and royalty. The lighting was low, and the setting was just right for the discussion of the novel. JayBee introduced her guests: Niece , Celestial and her longtime friends Sharon and Rachel.
Prior to the discussion commencing, Dee (who actually read this novel a few years ago) wanted to "vent" on her viewpoint about the overall "flavor" of the book with regards to "gender" specifications and perceptions. She voiced the sentiments of several of the participants regarding initial reservations about reading this work, and how she had to re-read with an open mind, while reminding herself that "this is a work of fiction." Dee concluded her point by expressing how much she enjoyed "The Shack" reading it the 2nd time around.
Maria opened with a question about receiving "obvious" signs from God. Several of the members revealed "signs" they'd received and how they reacted or responded. "Papa" presented as an "African-American female provoked much "chatter" as did the author's need to have her portrayed in an "over-the-top" stereotypical fashion (dancing, cooking, and in a position of servitude). U.S. G.I.R.L.S. discussed several "sub-topics on this; "was this racist...was this a marketing strategy....was Young insensitive/offensive? While there were many topics discussed, (i.e. perceptions, hierarchies, relationships, and ethnicity); suffrage and forgiveness, dominated the conversation.
Maria formulated the questions to allow us to flow from one topic to another without losing our momentum. Karen and Rachel shared similar personal stories of forgiveness and healing. The series of events that lead to "Mack's" accident and coma were "debated" back and forth, and after talking it through with the "vigor" of a "true" book club; we all agreed in the end. Although William Young's work was "fictional" there were several life lessons interjected that gave the reader some valuable "take-aways" from the book.
Maria "thanked" everyone for attending and made some final remarks about selecting "The Shack." She then solicited feedback from everyone. After our discussion, Maria explained how much she enjoys journaling and "gifted" everyone with a lovely journal, packaged in beautiful purple and gold metallic bags. This gift is symbolic of the wonderful journey that U.S. G.I.R.L.S has been on this year. We will all cherish our journals...as we document our journeys.
Thank YOU Maria for selecting an unforgettable read, the lovely journals, and hosting a magnificent event!
